Enver Kosumi, Recipient of the 2024 Democracy Award

The Kosovar Civil Society Foundation (KCSF) has awarded the 2024 Democracy Award to Mr. Enver Kosumi for his outstanding contribution to the democratization of Kosovar society.

In 2024, Mr. Kosumi, a long-time disability rights activist from Ferizaj, was the driving force behind the establishment of the first day care center for persons with disabilities in the municipality. This was a historic milestone for Ferizaj and a source of inspiration for the entire country. Through his tireless efforts, Mr. Kosumi mobilized public institutions, citizens, the diaspora, and local businesses to secure the financial and moral support needed to build this vital center.

At the award ceremony, KCSF’s Executive Director, Mr. Dren Puka, emphasized that the Democracy Award is meant to amplify civic activism and shine a public spotlight on citizen engagement.

“There is tireless work. There is sincere dedication. There are civil society initiatives that impact people’s lives more deeply and meaningfully than any political decision. These are actions driven not by the pursuit of power, but by the will to make a difference and above all, they inspire.”

Swedish Ambassador to Kosovo, Mr. Jonas Westerlund, stated that the voices of persons with disabilities must be heard in all forums, and that governments, civil society, and the private sector must work together to improve social protection.

“I am happy to be part of the Democracy Award in Ferizaj, where inspiring initiatives for people with disabilities are taking place. We need individuals who drive change and improve lives, not just in Kosovo, but globally.”

Ms. Beate Kajta Elsasser, Head of the Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Kosovo, stressed the importance of civic participation in a time of growing democratic backsliding and polarization.

“Civil society in Kosovo has been standing strong in the face of these pressures, but further support is needed to bring in new voices, reach marginalized communities, and protect civic space.”

In his remarks, Mr. Kosumi said the award is a reminder that change happens when people unite with purpose and open hearts.

“This award is not just a trophy or formal recognition. It tells a story, of a long journey filled with challenges, sacrifices, and big dreams. It carries the voices of every child and adult with disabilities who have found support in our center, the hope of every parent who finally feels included, and the unwavering dedication of our staff who show up every day with open hearts.”

The Democracy Award is a long-standing recognition program of KCSF, honoring individuals, informal initiatives, and NGOs whose work often through community mobilization, civic courage, and commitment has contributed meaningfully to the democratization of society.

The award is part of the EJA Kosovo program, implemented by KCSF and co-funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Government of Sweden.
